And women will fall back to being dissatisfied housewives who legally can't complain about being raped by their husbands because they're nothing but property.

I don't know about other women and with how many women like this series of crock, I don't know if there ARE any , but I enjoy what equality I have. I enjoy going to university. I enjoy the thought of being an academic and having my studies and research matter. I enjoy the thought that I am just as good as any man, that I am a contender as they are in my fields of study.

Books like this give out the message that this is what women want especially since it's so damned popular and women are raving about it and wanting to be like stupid, pathetic Anastasia who ought to be shot.

Women want to be controlled. They want men to stalk them and beat them. Is that what you want, women? Is that what you like? You enjoy pain? You enjoy feeling like absolute shit? Well, fine. When that happens, when shit like this book happens in real life and it has, and it IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, if only you'd look at the number of kidnapped women - there was a man who kept his girlfriend locked up in a room, which is what Christian would have done were this real life and not awfully-written fanfiction , then you're going to be sorry that you ever liked something like this.

Because the real thing is nothing like this shoddily-written book. The real thing is terrifying and painful and destructive. Think about that. Put away the fantasy and think about what happens in this book, pretend you're in that situation.

Some guy you don't know is telling you what to do. He's stalking you. You'd be pissed, right? You'd be scared. Some guy you don't know is way too cozy with you. You're going to the police, right? Please go to the police. And, for God's sake, forget that Christian is supposedly attractive.

Ok, it is not the greatest book ever, the writing is poor, it is repetitive, simplistic, immature But it is a fantasy. It keeps you waiting for the next encounter, it is an easy read, I could not put it down. The story as well as the sex is very unrealistic and kind of corny but how else can a sexual fantasy be? If you are looking for a literary master piece look somewhere else, but if you are looking for some distraction and a little fantasy to keep your imagination going, I say this is a good book for that.

I also don't understand the cover, it shows a tie.

It's apparently about a British woman whom thinks she's native to somewhere in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and the man she meets that well, does have the surname of Grey.

But he's never described as being that color, so they can't even claim one of the characters as being a shade of Grey!

I guess since it is set in the Pacific Northwest, and the stereotype of that area is being often cloudy and raining, one might count 50 shades of grey in the clouds.

But no illustration in the book shows such, so I think that hardly counts! In all, this book is just very confusing! Maybe if they named this book 3 or 4 Shades of Blue that would be Grey if not Tinted it would be a much more accurate title!

For shame for such deception! Originally when I picked this book up, I wasn't expecting a brilliant masterpiece. I wasn't expecting to be wowed by the author's choice of diction, or her intellectually stimulated by her ingenious imagery and wit. I was expecting a light romance novel, something on par to what I experienced when I read Twilight.

I don't get it. I just. Get it. I realize that this is a work of fanfiction originally which is fine, I myself write plenty of fanfiction but the characters lack SO much emotional depth, are pithy at best, and spin in circles with no development, no intrigue, no This book, and the fact that it has exploded in America and has remained on bestseller lists for months, is a tragedy.

The fact that EL James piggy-backed onto the success of another author, watered down her characters AND their emotions, and has sold millions of copies of her books astounds me. Stephanie Meyer herself can barely write, but EL James is somehow something I never thought possible worse than Meyer, and is a millionaire because of it.

Am I missing something? Is there some brilliant literary metaphor burried deep within this book that I just didn't catch? Is this supposed to mock our society? Is that what EL James is saying? Because if she is, mad props. I get that. But she's not. After hearing so much about how this book has put female-oriented erotica in the mainstream, my curiosity got the better of me and I disregarded the negative reviews.

The only thing erotic about it is the tease - you have to read through hundreds of pages of ridiculous, adolescent romance that promises, but barely delivers, anything juicy. I counted exactly two scenes in the 'playroom', as well as a couple of mildly fun elevator scenes, but none of them were worth the pages of repetition and bad writing.

And yes, women are hungry for romantic erotica, but this ain't it. First of all, we'd like to relate to the main character, and I got real tired of a stunningly-beautiful-but-doesn't-know-it something virgin who's never dated but is creative enough to wear a guy's boxers - and to make it worse, the poor dear 'forgets to eat'.

As for the guy, sure, it's great to fantasize about a hunky wealthy hero, but this guy was so ludicrous I thought I'd stumbled across a novelization of that old "My Dream Date" game. Ana is way too close to anal, Christian is an odd choice for someone with such kinky tastes, and 'Steele' and 'Gray' with their respectively 'steely' and 'gray' eyes - huh?

Come on, can't someone do better than this? Maybe I'll have to write an erotic novel about what really turns on most busy women - the simple fact of not having to plan anything. There's the true fantasy - if we're tied up in someone's 'playroom', at least it means we aren't driving carpool, deciding what to make for dinner, paying bills, or cleaning the house. I heard a lot of different things about this book, so I had to read it for myself to form my own opinion.

Being completely honest I understand the allure of the book, but it is definitely not my type of story. This reads like fanfiction and what I mean by this is that it lacks depth and the writing is a bit poor. I thought the book was quite boring because nothing was really going on.

The first few were interesting but then I started to realize that it was the same sex scene over and over with different props, no changes in the language I also have to say that I can't believe they are in love with each other, they barely know each other and Christian is a egocentric jerk. I honestly don't see how so many women would like a man like him, when will modern women understand that jealousy and possessiveness aren't healthy factors in a relationship.

I just feel like this is the type of book that may be misinterpreted because the author makes it sound like a passionate idealized story. I think many young women with low self-esteem are more likely to enter emotionally abusive relationships and this book in a way may make some believe that this type of love is ideal You can tell that this book started out as twilight fanfiction In Fifty Shades Christian's dark tendencies represent the fact that Edward is a dangerous vampire and of course Ana can't stay away from all of this.
