I only found that out when the newest update to Java came up and returned with an error box stating "Internal Error Wow, such a specific message. I did some searching around and found that you can use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to get rid of all your old Java installations and then install the newest version.
I have a user with a Windows 7 pc. When it was deployed Java was installed and working correctly. About a week later, when going to a site that requires Java, she's prompted to install it. Google says that this could be an issue with older versions of Java but there is no older version listed in Programs and Features. But IE has a plug-in for Java. Also, there is nothing about this on Java's site. I'm not sure if this is a Windows thing or Java, since it seems that the error has shown up for other, non-Java, installs.
I got it. I tried a registry cleanup utility like you suggested but that didn't work. But I then did a search for "Java" in the registry and deleted the keys that referenced any install file. After backing up the reg of course.
